JENKS BOYS FINISH 3RD IN STATE TOURNAMENT; JELLEY PLACES 6th - Tulsa World
JENKS BOYS GOLF TEAM FINISHES WINS 6A EAST REGIONAL
Ponca City, OK – A storm on Sunday dropped 9 inches of rain on the historic Perry Maxwell designed Ponca City Country Club golf course, site of the
6A East Regional Championship. However, spectacular play by the Jenks Boys Golf Team brightened the Monday, April 30, 2012, tournament that was
played in soggy conditions. The tournament, with approximately half of the 6A high schools participating, drew a field of 15 teams (75 players), all vying
to qualify for the 6A State Championship next week. Under OSSAA rules, the top 6 teams from the Regional qualify to participate in the State
Championship. In addition, the top 6 individuals, not otherwise qualified due to their teams qualifying, also qualify to participate in the State
Championship.
Once again, dominating play by the Trojan Trio, seniors Will McDonald and Aaron Davis and junior Brendon Jelley, carried the Trojans to a team
victory. In the morning round, Jelley, an Oklahoma State commit and highly and nationally ranked player in the 2013 graduating class, ran away from
the field with an awesome round of 67 (par 72). Jelley round was comprised of 5 birdies and no bogeys, was the only round under par in the morning,
and could have easily been better, as he hit 17 greens in regulation and scared the hole with birdie putt after birdie putt. Will McDonald and Aaron
Davis kept pace with the rest of the field with morning rounds of 75 and Jenks junior Mitchell Gaskins rounded out the team with a very good 76. When
the morning round concluded, Jenks’ team score of 293 put the team just ahead of Union High School at 296 and Broken Arrow High School at 302.
With the Regional Championship still in the balance, the Trojan Trio put the team on its back and carried it to a special afternoon round of 287
(collective 1 under par), that held off its competitors and gave Jenks the East Regional Championship.
In the afternoon, Aaron Davis set the pace for the team with a 3 under par round of 69. Will McDonald also shot under par, with a round of 71. Jelley
played well again with an even par round of 72, and Jenks freshman Preston Crawford really came through with a round of 75. The Trio dominated the
medalist competition. Jelley won the Champions medal with a combined score of 139. Davis won the 3d place medal with a score of 144, and Will
McDonald finished tied for 4th with a 146.
The six teams qualifying included Jenks (580), Union (592), Broken Arrow (601), Owasso (604), Ponca City (606) and Norman (628). The six individual
qualifiers were Spencer Smythe and Stephen Allen of Muskogee, Ashton Armstrong of Enid, Drew Lucas of Edison High School, Ben Bevilacqua of
Booker T. Washington High School and Cole Stephenson of Sand Springs.
Jenks next plays at the 6A State Championship next Monday and Tuesday, May 7 and 8, 2012, at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
The home course of storied golf program Oklahoma State University, the course has been the site of and hosted two NCAA National Championships.
So, Jenks and the other participating teams should have their hands full.
JENKS BOYS GOLF TEAM RALLIES TO WIN SECOND CONSECUTIVE GOLF TOURNAMENT
Oklahoma City, OK – The Jenks Boys Golf Team started the second and afternoon round trailing host team Edmond North High School at the “Randy
Hart Invitational Golf Tournament”. However, the Jenks’ “Trojan Trio” of seniors Will McDonald and Aaron Davis and junior Brendon Jelley, led an
afternoon charge that enabled Jenks to storm back in the afternoon and take the title from the host school and Jenks’ arch rival, Edmond North (605 to
607). The tournament was held at Lincoln West Golf Course in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The April 19, 2011 tournament drew a huge field of 25 top-
ranked high school teams and over 125 players from across the State of Oklahoma.
In the morning round, extreme wind conditions made good scores scarce. However, the Jenks team fought for every stroke and managed to stay within
striking distance of the home team. Then, with winds calming down in the afternoon, the Trojan Trio went to work. Afternoon rounds of 71 by Aaron
Davis, 72 by Brendon Jelley and 74 by Will McDonald paced an improbable comeback on the home course of the host team.
Eric Kline, a senior from Ponca City High School was medalist in the individual competition, with a two round total of 144. Considering that the morning
round was played in almost unplayable wind conditions, his morning score of 69 was incredible and 5 strokes better than his nearest competitor, Jenks’
Brendon Jelley. Jelley’s total of 146 was good enough for 2nd place and Aaron Davis’ total of 150 tied him for 6th place
The winning Jenks team was comprised of Brendon Jelley (74-72-=146), Will McDonald (78-74=152), Aaron Davis (79-71=150), Preston Crawford (84-
79= 165), Conner Houston (92-83= 175) and Mitchell Gaskins (81-76= 157). A second Jenks team comprised of, Jordon Rogers (82-81=163), Cody
Burns (102-87= 189), Brett Tyndall (80-78=158), and Austin Sieganthaler (92-82=174) also turned in a solid performance. Contrary to the usual high
school format where teams are comprised of 5 players, Edmond North’s tournament format allowed teams 6 players, from which the best 4 scores would
be kept.
With the Regional and State Golf Tournaments right around the corner, it would appear the Trojans are trending in the right direction, having won 3 of
the last 4 tournaments. Coach Brent Wilcoxen has certainly earned his pay this year, as well as probably a little grey hair. His steady and experienced
hand appears to have molded what appeared, early on, to be an underachieving Jenks Boys golf team, into another Championship contender. If the
underdog Trojans are able to win the State title, it will be the seventh (7th) State Championship title of Coach Wilcoxen’s illustrious career and the
fourteenth (14th) time his teams have finished first or second in Oklahoma’s 6A or large school division.
JENKS BOYS GOLF TEAM WINS ADA TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
Ada, OK – The Jenks Boys Golf Team won their second team title this year by winning the Ada High School Invitational Tournament of Champions. The
Ada tournament was held Monday April 16, 2012, at the Ada Country Club and is an eighteen hole event. The annual tournament is known for its
unusual “Maxwell” format wherein teammates play together as a unit and an over/under team score is kept for each hole and tallied at the end of the
round. After each hole, the team’s worst individual score is discarded and the cumulative score of the remaining four players to par is the teams score
on the hole. So, for example on a par 4 hole, if a team were to have one player with a birdie, three players with a par and one player with a double
bogey, they would discard the double bogey and the team score would be one under (-1) for the hole. The tournament also has an individual stroke
play competition and an individual putting competition.
Jenks won the team event with a “Maxwell” team total of 278. Heritage Hall finished second with a team score of 285, and Edmond North finished a close
third at 288. The Jenks team was comprised of Will McDonald, 68, Brendon Jelley, 72, Aaron Davis, 71, Preston Crawford, 78, and Conner Houston,
78.
In addition to the team title, Jenks players swept the individual competitions. Jenks senior stalwart won medalist honors with a sizzling 68, four shots
under par. Aaron Davis finished in a three way tie for 2nd, with a one under score of 71 and Brendon Jelley, tied for 5th with an even par score of 72.
One unique feature of this tournament is that the competitors track the number of putts they have, and a putting medalist title given to the player with
the lowest number of putts. Jenks senior Aaron Davis, with only 25 putts, won this award.
The Jenks Boys team next plays at the Edmond North High School Invitational Golf Tournament on Thursday April 19, 2012.

high school teams and 94 players from across the State of Oklahoma. The difficult University of Oklahoma golf course proved challenging to the field.
Jenks won this tournament in 2011, but had their hopes at a repeat title derailed by a poor morning round that put the team back in the pack. However,
